Where have all the sparrows gone?

The once common house sparrow is no more seen around our city home. Nor is it found at our farm. They seem to be doing fairly fine at our work place just outside the city. But with the city bursting it's boundaries, I have no clue how long the outskirts would remain the ideal habitat for the sparrows.

Decided to put up some nesting boxes inside the factory building today! The birds don't seem to mind the noise all the machines make. Hope they like the new homes..

Will post some pictures when the boxes are ready and put up.

  1. Where have all the sparrows gone.
This was a very often asked question in the 90s. A survey on sparrows or rather a lack of them in the UK. showed that certain districts were void of sparrows which were the most prolific garden bird.
It is now believed that the scarcity of the sparrow was due to a virus which not only decimated the sparrow population in the UK. but worldwide. I am a Bombaite now resident in the UK. and a very keen birder. I have sparrow nestboxes in my garden which were designed and recommended by the RSPB and am pleased to report that I have a healthy sparrow population in my garden (23)
Let us hope that nature will overcome this virus and afford these sparrows some immunity.
